Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Drug and alcohol treatment is an essential process for individuals who have become addicted to them. However, finding the most effective treatment center for an individual and their situation, certainly can be challenging. The very drug rehab that worked for one person can have a completely different effect or outcome on another. Therefore, knowing as much as possible about that persons addiction as well as there upbringing and any underlying issues they might be dealing with should assist in making a more competent decision. But, you still need to educate yourself on the various treatments available to correctly match the needs of the addict to the right rehab facility.

Most people have heard of or are even familiar with the 12 step approaches recovery system. The 12 steps program may also be better known as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous programs. These are the most widely used programs for drug addicts. What’s more, is that many drug or alcohol rehabilitation centers use the 12 steps as the foundation of there treatment program. However, the more comprehensive centers incorporate many other therapies and healing techniques to effectively treat all aspects of their patients illnesses. A main aspect of the 12 step program is putting faith in a higher power, the God of your choosing, which, makes it a faith based program.

Other drug and alcohol treatment programs are Christian based. These programs deliver drug addiction treatment based on Christianity, usually, they involve 12 step methods and some may also include different treatments such as psychotherapies.

Alternative addiction treatment programs use other styles of rehabilitation to achieve lasting recovery. these centers vary in type but have one thing in common they don not use the 12 step methodology. The most well known of these centers is the Narconon program. Narconon is a holistic treatment program that doesn’t believe in prescribing medication in the recovery process, other that medical detoxification for physically addicted individuals. In fact, in beginning phase of their program, students (as they refer to their patients) enter holistic detox, which consists of many vitamin supplements, an exercise regiment, and a low temperature sauna to excrete deep tissue toxins left from drug byproducts in the body.

Therapeutic Community rehab centers are an intensive approach to treatment, actually, too intense for many. They provide a no nonsense program which usually have clients working from early morning to late at night within the facility. Moreover, have verbal attack therapy sessions where individuals express anger toward one another in an attempt to brake down pridefulness and make those aware of the faults. Therapeutic Community drug rehabs are usually 1 to 2 years in length.

Although, drug addiction treatment can be very expensive remaining hooked on drugs or alcohol will eventually cost that person and their family and/or friends more in the long run. Its sometimes difficult to know which program is ideal for a person if would like help deturmaning an appropriate facilities for yourself or a loved one contact one of our drug counselors at no cost to you.

Drug Rehabs and Drug Addiction Treatment

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Drug rehabs providing drug addiction treatment all need to have several elements in place to begin treating patients. Drug rehabs needs to be licensed by the state in which they operate. This licensure insures the drug rehabsare meeting certain criteria and providing the required rehab services.

Secondly, the staff that works at these rehabs need to have as a minimum addiction certification and in most cases, the majority of the rehab staff will have a masters degree. It is not neccessary to be recovering from a drug addiction to work in a rehab.

Even with meeting the criteria listed above it is difficult to determine if a rehab is providing effective drug addiction treatment. If youare looking for a rehab that is effective and reputable, you can call the national addiction helpline at 1-800-511-9225

Balance in a Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Drug and alcohol rehab centers always have serveral balancing acts to achieve while assisting clients to find sobriety. One is between dealing with the past, present and future. Helping people dealing with the realm of the past is primarily a counseling issue. Moving past our histories and old behaviors many times is best handled by competent and caring counselors.

Dealing with the present is best handled by a busy and full schedule. One of the best mood elevators is activity with purpose. It is imperitive that drug and alcohol rehabs have most of the days scheduled with activity. Many times addiction robs people of any activity that does not involve using drugs and alcohol.

The future is best handled by teaching new skills. To change the direction of future behavior clients need to learn and master new methods of handling life. This is the realm of the educator. A quality drug and alcohol rehab program needs to balance the counseling with education. At the same time clients respond best when they have to get out and do something at the same time. Juggling these 3 balls in the air may not be easy. There is no perfect mix for all clients. The road to a sober life involves some of each.

Florida Rehab Centers Need To Provide Drug Detox

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Over the years many rehab centers have opened in Florida, advertise drug detox but do not provide it. Drug detox is actually provided in another setting in an entirely different rehab center. After detox, the patient is transferred back to the original rehab center. While this type of addiction treatment is not illegal or even harmful to the patient, it is far from optimal rehab.

A Florida rehab center should provide medical detox, residential addiction treatment, as well as, other continuums of care. This allows the patient to receive the optimum in rehab as this could be the one chance they have at accessing treatment. Again, there is nothing wrong with the rehab centers that transfer their patients elsewhere for detox, it just is not the best possible care for the patient.

To locate a Florida rehab center with a full continuum of care you can call the national addiction helpline at 1-800-511-9225.

Eating Disorder Treatment and Diets

Why a Diet Doesn’t Work Like an Eating Disorder Treatment Program
We may not know why we overeat. We may be eating when we are lonely, angry, sad, anxious or bored. We may be using food to cope with stress. But in time, food stops working and our unhealthy eating patterns or extra pounds don’t offer comfort.

We are not using food for physical hunger. We may not even know if we are hungry or not. As soon as the thought of food comes to our minds, we are hard-wired to reach for it. It becomes automatic. In essence, eating becomes a habitual coping mechanism. Repeating this behavior over and over forms a predictable habit pattern. We gain weight, go on another diet, rebel and start the cycle over again.

All diets work temporarily. However, when we diet, we set ourselves up to overeat because we subconsciously rebel over restricting our food. Some proceed to develop eating disorders. Binge eating often starts as a direct result of dieting. So how do we get out of this cycle?

How an Eating Disorder Treatment Program Works

We know all behaviors start with a thought, whether we are aware of the thought or not. We act on these thoughts throughout our day. Have you ever wondered, “Why am I eating this?” Many of us have totally disconnected from our internal appetite. We may habitually reach for food when we are not hungry. We learn that awareness is the first key for opening the door to change. We cannot change something we are not aware of, but with awareness change is possible.

Through the use of a structured eating disorder program, awareness leads to new thinking patterns that produce new eating behaviors. You learn alternatives that can work uniquely for you. Your behavior changes easily and naturally when your internal habitual thoughts change. This personal internal form of control is empowering and dramatically increases self-esteem.

We have learned from years of experience that external controls work only temporally. An eating disorder program addresses the core issues of out-of-control eating and shows how to reconnect to a healthy way of relating to food, your appetite, and body. Each session or group is outlined with specific objectives, goals, homework assignments and corresponding guided imagery. The sessions assist you in identifying unhealthy patterns, triggers, underlying thoughts and belief systems that keep you locked in the disordered eating.
