Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Minnesota Drug Addiction Treatment Centers Has Come a Long way

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

For years all we heard was the Minnesota model of addiction treatment. The complete focus of drug rehabs in Minnesota was on the 12 steps, the Big Book and attending 12 step meetings. While all of that is crucial for long term recovery, it has been discovered there is more to drug rehab treatment than that.

Minnesota Addiction Treatment Centers

Minnesota addiction treatment centers
began to realize they were admitting patients that suffered from more than drug addiction and alcohol abuse. They seemed to suffer from a combination of drug addiction and depression or other psychiatric disorders that didn’t seem to get better when the drugs and alcohol were discontinued. This combination of coexisting disorders became known as a dual diagnosis and many Minnesota drug rehabs were not equipped to effectively treat a dual diagnosis.

Florida Drug Rehabs Among First to Treat Dual Diagnosis

Much to their credit, a few Florida drug rehabs recognized the need for comprehensive dual diagnosis treatment within the drug rehab itself. These drug rehabs were able to integrate the teachings of the Minnesota model of addiction treatment and combine it with the philosophies of the “psychiatric world”. As a result the patient received better treatment and patients from Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio began to take advantage of the dual diagnosis treatment resources offered in Florida drug rehabs. To this day, patients from all over the country travel to Florida drug treatment programs for dual diagnosis treatment.

Minnesota Dual Diagnosis Treatment Centers

Today, many of the Minnesota drug treatment centers have implemented many of the practices of the Florida addiction treatment community for dual diagnosis treatment, much as the Florida drug rehabs borrowed from the Minnesota drug rehabs for addiction treatment. Today, dual diagnosis is being effectively treated in drug rehabs throughout the country.

Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment Makes a Difference

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Integrated dual diagnosis treatment services make a significant difference in the effectivensss of a drug rehab program. Although the individual might have checked into the drug rehab program for treatment of their drug addiction, to not treat the psychiatric problem is not practicing good addiction medicine. When providing high quality dual diagnosis treatment, you have to review and treat many different aspects of a person’s illness.

While we know that medication management, therapy and medical care are important, issues such as; housing, employment, finances, social networking or educational services are also important. In many cases, a drug rehab program will address these issues in their discharge planning, but they really should be resolved and planned for during the entire dual diagnosis treatment process.

Psychiatric Care in a Drug Rehab Program

In the past psychiatrists were discouraged from providing care in a drug rehabilitation program. Today, drug rehabs recognize the importance of treating a psychiatric disorder while the patient is in the drug treatment program. By treating these disorders concurrently, the relapse rate of patients decreases significantly. Most drug rehabs will try and find a psychiatrist that is trained in addiction medicine and certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
